The trek to Everest Base Camp must be on everyone's bucket list. This is your chance to follow in the footsteps of Hillary & Tenzing in autumn 2021. As the highest mountain on earth, Everest has a magical appeal.
Stevie Kidd is proud to announce that this trek will be led by Ricky Munday, who reached the summit of Everest on 18th May, 2018. As you trek towards Everest Base Camp, he'll share incredible stories from his two Everest expeditions.
After arriving in Kathmandu, you'll experience the wonderful energy, sights and smells of this vibrant capital. From Kathmandu, we make an early departure to the dramatic Lukla airstrip, where our journey to Everest truly begins.
Nepal is a fascinating country, with idyllic blue roofed houses, vibrant prayer flags, smiling Sherpas and spectacular scenery. We trek through the bustling Sherpa capital, Namche Bazaar and many other delightful Sherpa villages. We'll have breath-taking mountain views of one of the most beautiful peaks in the world - Ama Dablam.
We'll visit Everest Base camp, before finally completing our remarkable journey with an ascent of the magnificent peak of Kala Patthar (5,554m). On the summit, we'll be rewarded with an unbeatable 360-degree panorama of spectacular 8,000m peaks, including mighty Everest herself.
We'll be guided by Phurba Wangchhu Sherpa (10 Everest Summits) and supported by porters.
Kilimanjaro translates as 'mountain of the springs' and it holds some of the world's last remaining and fast-receding tropical glaciers, which you will have the opportunity to witness on summit day.
We will pass through five different vegetation zones as we ascend from the lowest to the highest point: Lower slopes, montane forest, heath and moorland, alpine desert and summit rock and ice, which makes an ascent of the mountain even more special.
Days 1/2 - Depart UK and fly to Kathmandu. Transfer to hotel in a quiet locale but close to the bustling Thamel district of Kathmandu.
Day 3 - Early in the morning we transfer to the airport for a spectacular and breathtaking flight to the Sherpa village of Lukla (2,800m) and trek down to the brightly painted lodges of Phakding (2,660m).
Day 4 - We trek into Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the Sherpa capital and heart of the Khumbu. At Monjo, we enter Sagarmartha National Park and can visit the small visitor centre there. The track starts to rise up Namche Hill - the first big ascent - it's essential to take a slow and steady pace. (6/7 hours)
Day 5 - Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar. We can spend the day taking short walks up to Thami or Khumjung, visiting the Everest, Ama Dablam and Pumori viewpoints or just relaxing and exploring the narrow streets of Namche.
Day 6 - We climb steeply out of Namche where the mountain views open up, with superb views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse, before arriving in Debuche (3,730m). (6//7 hours)
Day 7 - A great day’s walking through rhododendron trees that gradually guide us back to the river and into Pangboche - a great viewpoint for Ama Dablam. We turn up the Imja valley to reach the delightful, picturesque village of Dingboche (4,365m) (5 hours)
Day 8 - An acclimatisation day with an optional short trek to 4,800m, with great views of Island Peak.
Day 9 - We reach the Khumbu glacier and trek alongside it to reach the small village of Lobuche (4,930m). (5 hours)
Day 10 - We trek next to the Khumbu Glacier to the crossing of the Changri Glacier to GorakShep. We'll trek up to the historical Everest Base Camp (5,340m), and return to GorakShep.
Day 11 - We'll make an early ascent of Kala Patthar (5,554m) to catch a classic view of Everest, and descend to Dingboche.
Day 12 - Enjoy the lower altitude walking and the tea houses as we descend to Namche.
Day 13 - Treek out from Namche to Lukla - every step feels warmer and more oxygenated!.
Day 14 - Fly Lukla to Kathmandu and back to the comforts of our hotel in Thamel - this is a good time to buy souvenirs and haggle with the local shopkeepers. We'll have a celebratory meal.
Day 15 - Spare day in case of bad weather
Day 16 - Depart Kathmandu, return home.
You will be supported by Ricky Munday, Stevie Kidd and the Reach Your Peak team along with local English-speaking Sherpa guides. You will carry only what you need for each day's trekking in a small rucksack. Our guide will be Phurba Wangchhu Sherpa (12 Everest Summits) who climbed to the summit of Everest with Ricky in May 2018. He has completed the trek to Everest Base Camp over 200 times.
All food on the trek is provided, and we will eat in the teahouses that we stay in overnight. Sufficient fresh water will be provided daily to ensure you stay hydrated. Accommodation will be on shared basis in teahouses, which are locally owned and run fairly basic establishments that provide good food, accommodation with 3-4 beds in dormitories (twins sometimes available). You'll need a sleeping mat and sleeping bag. There's a central dining room and toilet facilities are often outside. The local families will often entertain us with local songs and dance.
On the trek, we'll carry an expedition first aid kit, a satellite phone and have two-way radio contact with all of our guides at all times. We will also carry a pulse-oximeter to monitor your oxygen levels regularly. In the event of an emergency, rescue is available and - if your travel insurance covers medical evacuations up to 5,554 meters above sea level - your insurance company should cover any additional costs.
The main problem faced by climbers or trekkers is trying to climb too quickly. From a medical perspective, we are trekking in very high altitude (up to 5,500m) and in extreme altitude (summit day Kala Patthar above 5,500m). At sea level, the standard barometric pressure is 101 kPa. At 5,554m on the summit of Kala Pathhar, the standard barometric pressure is 52 kPa. This lower oxygen pressure means that there are fewer oxygen molecules in the same volume of air - there is only 51% of the oxygen available compared to sea level.
Your body reacts to this lower oxygen level in a variety of ways - for example, your respiration (breathing) rate increases, and your body starts to generate more red blood cells. The respiration increase begins immediately, but the production of extra red blood cells takes longer. Our ascent profile will follow a typical ‘climb high / sleep low’ approach and we allow a couple of rest/acclimatisation days during the trek. This ensures that we're giving our bodies time to acclimatise to the lower oxygen levels before reaching Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar summit day. I would also recommend that you discuss with your GP the option of using diamox (acetazolamide) to help prevent and treat altitude sickness.

Training & Fitness:
The minimum age is 18 years old. You'll be trekking for many consecutive days at high altitude and in varied temperatures and the fitter you are the more you will enjoy your expedition. We will provide you with a training guide upon booking, but you should aim to walk regularly in the hills with a light pack (7-10kg) and follow an exercise routine to strengthen your core and legs and to increase your cardiovascular fitness. If you are used to regular multi-day hill walking, you'll have the right level of fitness to fully enjoy this trek. Previous walking experience is not essential but will help you get the most out of this trip. Most days involve 5 - 7 hours walking plus plenty of rest stops.
Ricky Munday will be leading this expedition. He's a qualified Mountain Leader with an Expedition First Aid qualification and is a full member of the Mountain Training Association.
Ricky has planned and completed 18 expeditions to 6 continents over the past decade, and on 18th May 2018 he reached the summit of Mount Everest (8,848m). He has an Honours degree in Physiology & Sport Science and is also a Chartered Accountant. As a Red Cross international delegate, he worked in 5 countries in Africa, Asia & the Caribbean in the aftermath of natural disasters to support the most vulnerable people.
He worked for 4 years as a member of the executive team at the UK's national polar research organisation. He has summited Elbrus before, and he has spent over 120 days trekking or climbing above 5,000m during his expeditions, so he is well-placed to advise on how to prevent altitude sickness, or to minimise the impact.
In 2017, he successfully evacuated a badly injured teammate from Mount Everest. As a Mountain Leader, he regularly leads groups in the UK mountains, including on multiple National 3 Peaks events.
You need to ensure that you have a policy which covers trekking to 5,554m, but it does not need to cover technical climbing. You're advised to take out insurance to cover potential events that might cause you to cancel your trip. You should bring with you a copy of your policy and also a photocopy of your passport, and to keep it separate to your own documents in the unlikely event that you lose your passport.
